ROMANIA - Museum in the Citadel of SUCEAVA

(8 votes)

SUCEAVA is the largest city and the seat of SUCEAVA COUNTY, in the historical region of BUKOVINA, situated in Central Europe and north-eastern ROMANIA respectively.     The city was the capital of the Principality of MOLDAVIA from 1388 to 1565, and here, is one of the fortresses built by the Principe of MOLDAVIA - ȘTEFAN cel MARE (15th century), called SUCEAVA FORTRESS
Together with the rest of BUKOVINA, SUCEAVA was under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy (later Austria-Hungary) from 1775 to 1918. At the end of World War I, it became part of GREATER ROMANIA.
SUCEAVA is the place of several medieval sites that are closely linked with the history of Principality of MOLDAVIA. The most significant and the best preserved in time is the Seat Fortress of SUCEAVA (Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei) or SUCEAVA CITADEL, a medieval castle situated on the eastern edge of the contemporary city.
The medieval castle was part of the fortification system built in MOLDAVIA in the late 14th century, because of the emergence of the Ottoman danger. It became strong enough to hold off an attack by Ottoman sultan Mehmed II (the conqueror of Constantinople), in 1476 (Wikipedia).
