The name derives from the name of the Maiandros River (now Menderes) in Turkey. They arise from lateral erosion of watercourses. The impact bank is washed away by the watercourse and the opposite bank is the place where river sediments settle. Meanders are divided into loose (formed in large flat sections) and deepened (formed where the rivers cut through the mountains).
